SMUD's own battery storage incentive program (separate from the CPUC/IOU-administered SGIP, which does not apply to SMUD customers as a municipal utility outside CPUC jurisdiction, and separate from SMUD's Solar and Storage Rate (SSR) billing structure). One-time enrollment incentive of up to $10,000 per household ($500/kWh minus a 20% holdback) for new battery energy storage system customers who enroll within 90 days of receiving Permission to Operate (PTO) from SMUD. Ongoing quarterly incentives are currently only available for Tesla batteries ($110 for 1 battery, $220 for 2, $330 for 3+); other eligible brands (Eguana, Enphase, Franklin, SolarEdge, Sonnen) receive only the one-time enrollment incentive at this time.

SMUD is a municipal (publicly-owned) electric utility serving the City of Sacramento, distinct from the investor-owned utilities (PG&E, SCE, SDG&E) regulated by the CPUC. Confirmed via SMUD's own rate schedule documents and its own statement that it is 'not regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission,' which is why its net metering rules diverge from the statewide NEM 3.0 (NBT) framework.
