This is NOT traditional net metering โ€” Austin Energy meters and credits 100% of solar production at the VoS rate, while separately billing the customer for all electricity consumed, rather than netting production against consumption 1:1. Credits apply only to electric charges (not water, solid waste, etc.) and roll forward indefinitely but are non-transferable.

Inspection steps

  • Once the permit reaches 'Active' status, the contractor requests a solar inspection through the Austin Build + Connect (AB+C) portal's 'My Inspections' tab
  • A pre-construction meeting is optional for residential projects (required for commercial); once requested, a Final solar inspection cannot be scheduled until the pre-construction meeting is complete
  • All other related permits (e.g. Repair/Upgrade EPs) must be in 'Final' status before a Final Auxiliary Power EP inspection can be scheduled
  • After the Final inspection passes, Austin Energy's Distributed Metering Operations (AE DMO) team installs the solar meter(s) on site and updates the permit to 'Final' status, at which point the customer receives Permission to Operate (PTO)
