Renewable Energy Technologies Income Tax Credit (RETITC) — Solar Energy System
Statewide Hawaii state income tax credit for solar energy systems (HRS 235-12.5): 35% of actual installed cost, capped at $5,000 per system for single-family residential property (lower of the two), $350 per unit for multi-family residential, or $500,000 per system for commercial property. A separate, higher-value $2,250 cap applies if the system's primary purpose is solar water heating rather than PV. Any utility rebate received must be deducted from system cost before computing the credit. Applies statewide to any Hawaii taxpayer regardless of county/island — a genuine reusable statewide fact, not utility- or county-specific.

Per Hawaiian Electric's own 'Smart Renewable Energy Programs' page: as of the program's rollout (beginning ~April 2024), most new residential rooftop solar customers choose between 'Smart Renewable Energy (SRE) Export' (export bill credits, no project size limit) and 'SRE Non-Export' (no export credits, no size limit); a 'Bring Your Own Device Plus (BYOD Plus)' incentive is available for battery installations dispatched during specified periods. Legacy 'Net Energy Metering (NEM)' and 'NEM Plus' customers are NOT required to transition and may instead enroll additional capacity under 'NEM Plus' or 'NEM Plus Limited Export.' Older programs (Customer Grid-Supply, Customer Grid-Supply Plus, Smart Export, Standard Interconnection Agreement, Customer Self-Supply) are closed to new customers and are being transitioned into the SRE framework over time (transitions after 7 years in-program began Oct. 1, 2024). All Smart Renewable Energy participants must have an advanced (smart) meter.
